PROXIMITY

"In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you."

- Deepak Chopra

"

Proximity explores the principles of order and chaos through a carefully arranged geometrical pattern in the lobby of 5 Manhattan West. Each mechanical unit, equipped with solar panels, develops its own individuality through the dynamic interplay of position, sunlight, artificial light, and shadows. The work serves as an allegory for the cyclical nature of life, light, and routines, creating a meditative and contemplative space through its movement and sound.

The installation juxtaposes the bustling exterior of commuters rushing through busy cityscapes with the serene, slow moments within the interior space. While both are characterized by chaos and rhythm, they differ in pace. What may seem mundane when focusing on a single unit becomes profound when observing the larger movement, revealing patterns reminiscent of murmuration or the surface movement of water. This exploration of the gestalt—the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts—reflects how group cohesion can create a unified phenomenon that transcends individual elements. Through this, Katayama highlights the constant motion and energy that define urban environments, offering viewers a moment of serenity and a reflective perspective on the interconnected nature of city life.
